About Internal Medicine

Simply put, internal medicine deals with the internal organs of the human body and the non-surgical management of adult diseases. Internal medicine physicians – or internists – are knowledgeable about a broad range of adult symptoms and diseases, making them particularly adept at caring for patients with both simple and complex problems.

The practice of internal medicine is considered a comprehensive specialty and because of the internist's ability to view the patient as a whole, they serve a critical role in managing and coordinating health care across all stages of an adult’s life.

At Laureate Medical Group, our physicians are specially trained to help prevent, detect, and treat diseases in adults and to manage chronic diseases such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, asthma, hypothyroidism, arthritis, and depression. They also treat acute complaints, including respiratory infections, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, abdominal issues, back pain, rashes, joint pain, and headaches or stomach aches. Preventative care is an important part of our practice as well, and can include updating vaccines, annual wellness exams, recommending cancer screenings, encouraging healthy lifestyle habits and working with patients to help control risk factors such as elevated blood pressure, obesity, elevated blood sugars and high cholesterol.

Whether visiting our practice for a particular complaint or an annual check-up, Laureate Medical Group’s physicians and mid-level providers focus on each patient’s overall health. As a result, they often create long-term care plans which can include adding or changing medications, ordering specific tests, following lab tests and results for trends or changes in your health status and collaborating with physicians in other specialties to confirm a diagnosis or order preventive tests like a mammogram or colonoscopy.
