According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), 50 to 70 million adults in the U.S. suffer from some form of sleep disorder.
Getting the right amount of sleep is a critical factor in maintaining good overall health. Sleep disturbances may result from any number of causes but a lack of sleep can affect every area of your life – from poor performance at work to car accidents. While every person doesn’t need the same amount of sleep each day, having restful, restorative sleep can make a significant difference in the quality of your daily life.
At Laureate Medical Group, our Sleep Medicine practice is designed to evaluate and identify the primary cause of sleep disorders and work with patients to find the best method of solving the underlying issue.
The most common sleep problem for adults is insomnia, which can be temporary or chronic. A more serious issue is sleep apnea – where a person actually stops breathing during sleep cycles. But there are many other reasons you may not be obtaining the benefits of sleep as you should, including other sleep disorders which may cause disruption in the quality of your sleep, as well as chronic medical conditions and many of the medications used to treat those conditions.
Disrupted or inadequate sleep may also be the result of depression, anxiety, and poor dietary habits – including use of alcohol, nicotine or caffeine. And your sleep bio-rhythm (circadian rhythm) can be interrupted if you travel frequently across time zones or do shift work.
Laureate Medical Group’s Sleep Medicine Practice provides full consultation and treatment of all sleep disorders, including:
Home sleep testing is available and all sleep lab testing is performed at Northside Hospital’s Sleep Disorders Center.
