The endocrine glands include the pituitary, thyroid, pancreas, adrenals, ovaries and testes, and most endocrine conditions are long-term or chronic.

Diabetes occurs when the hormone insulin, produced by the pancreas, is either deficient or absent, causing an elevation in blood sugar levels. Another common reason to visit an endocrinologist is for thyroid dysfunction, when the thyroid can be overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism).
